Vocational training. Free basic adult education. Associate’s degree programs. You can find them all and more at Chattahoochee Valley Community College in Phenix City. They’ve been helping locals train for careers ever since the 1970s. If you’re thinking of becoming a Pirate—or just cheering them on—learn more about our latest local spotlight.


Chattahoochee Valley Community College first began instructing students in 1973. Back then, students  learned in a temporary building. In addition, the school had a different name! It used to go by “Chattahoochee Valley State Junior College.” As a local public community college, it has helped residents from Russell County, AL to Columbus, GA earn their degrees.

The College has grown drastically over the years. It taught 280 students in 1974. This year, the current enrollment is 1,568—and you could be one of the pupils next semester.


Thinking about auditing a class or enrolling when everything calms down? CVCC has an awesome curriculum available for students. You can choose from options like dual enrollment, free adult education in basic subjects, workforce development, career coaching, and associate’s degrees. For instance, some of the courses of studies and majors include:

  • Industrial maintenance;
  • Welding;
  • Associate of Science in Pre-Computer Science;
  • Medical assisting;
  • Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts;
  • Practical nursing;
  • Associate of Science in General Studies;
  • Associate of Science in Pre-Business;
  • Multimedia graphic design;
  • Fire science; and
  • Criminal justice.

Online Learning

The world is currently navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, CVCC currently has online learning policies in place for regular instruction. For the summer semester, register for classes by May 20. However, you can join CVCC’s online program throughout the year!
