Shaded in many spots, the Riverwalk is handicap accessible, and has both paved and gravel pathways. Hardwoods and pines dot both sides of the Riverwalk, with older, thicker hardwoods and pines on the west and open hardwoods on the east (river) bank. Healthy, vibrant vegetation along the walkway flourishes in the spring and summer. Beautiful foliage comes in the fall, when the leaves change colors.
The gorgeous Southern sun shines down on the Riverwalk as well, to the enjoyment of many a passerby, jogger, and cyclist. Birdwatching is also a major pastime on the Riverwalk—and visitors can spot an ample amount of fowls on the trails or up in the canopy. Northern Parulas, Yellow-billed Cuckoos, American Redstarts, and many more variety of birds call the Phenix City Riverwalk home.
Future Plans
Built using materials ranging from cement and brick to boardwalk-style decking, the Riverwalk may soon boast even more acreage. Plans are in motion for the Riverwalk to stretch two miles north to Highway 80 as well as three miles south to State Docks Road and a half-mile west, linking up to the Phenix City Nature Trail. Boutiques, cafés, and other riverside restaurants may also soon pop up along the Riverwalk.
